A natural question many farmers are asking is, ‘Will canola prices continue to move lower or are there reasons to be optimistic about values going forward?’. No one has a perfect crystal ball, but understanding some of the (many) moving parts that affect the canola market can help in making an educated guess on some potential scenarios. And as much as China’s tariffs on Canadian canola seed (as well as oil and meal) is a bearish factor, there are other things impacting values a well.
The Canadian canola industry is disappointed with the support measures announced today by the federal government in response to the closure of the Chinese market to Canadian canola seed, oil and meal. The announced measures fall short of what is required to support the industry during this unprecedented trade disruption.
Today, China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) announced that it has extended its anti-dumping investigation into canola seed imports from Canada until March 9, 2026. The anti-dumping investigation was initiated on September 9, 2024, and was due to be completed within a year, with the possibility of an extension of up to six months.
The Canola Council of Canada (CCC) and Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) are hopeful this extension signals a willingness by the Canadian and Chinese governments to work towards a timely resolution to the tariff issues having widespread impact on the Canadian canola value chain.
Today, Premier Scott Moe, along with Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding and Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison, met with Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Heath MacDonald, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister Kody Blois and leaders from Saskatchewan’s canola sector to address the recent tariffs imposed by China on provincial canola exports.
August 12, 2025 – The Canola Council of Canada (CCC) and Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) are deeply disappointed with today’s preliminary ruling by China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) as part of its anti-dumping investigation into Canadian canola seed imports. In its ruling, MOFCOM announced the imposition of a 75.8% duty, collected in the form of a deposit, on all Canadian canola seed shipments as of August 14, 2025.
