Announces New Executive Director
The board of directors of the Saskatchewan Canola Development
Commission (SCDC) are pleased to announce the appointment of Catherine
Folkersen to the position of Executive Director. Ms. Folkersen
will assume her position July 28th, 2008.

Canola
plant to be built in Yorkton, construction to begin in 2010
A major canola processing plant will be built in Yorkton, James
Richardson International Ltd. announced Friday. Construction of
the plant, which will cost in excess of $100 million, will begin
immediately. The plant is expected to go into production in 2010.

House
of Commons Passes Milestone Biofuels Bill
In a milestone decision today, the House of Commons overwhelmingly
passed a bill that will implement a national Renewable Fuel Standard,
requiring ethanol and biodiesel blended transportation fuels in
Canada. It is the first legislation of its kind in Canada.

New
Holland embraces pure biodiesel
New Holland is supporting the use of pure biodiesel in all of
its equipment that uses New Holland-manufactured diesel engines.
The company was the first major agricultural equipment manufacturer
to support a B20 blend and is now the first to warranty equipment
using B100 biodiesel.

The Canola Council of Canada has collaborated
with canola industry partners to establish a major fund to support
innovative research linking canola oil to improving the health
of all Canadians.

Cargill
to double processing capacity at Clavet
Cargill announces plans to double its processing
capacity at its Clavet facility. Once this new plant is added
the total canola crushing capacity at this facility will be 1.5
million tones per year. The new plant will be operational in November
of 2008. Increased consumption of specialty oils (zero trans fat)
and generic canola oil in U.S. and abroad is one of the main reasons
Cargill is increasing its crush capacity.

Estimated
Canola Plant Populations Under Various Seeding Conditions
To maximize yield, ideal plant populations range from 7-14
plants/ft2. At any set seeding rate (lb/ac), the typical
average for emergence is around 50% depending on field conditions.
The plant population will also be affected by seed size, measured
as thousand seed weight (TSW) in grams.

Urgent!
Canadian government's draft spring budget falls short on
biofuels. Help send a letter to Prime Minister Harper!
The
Canadian government's draft spring budget item for biofuels falls
very short of what is required to build a Canadian biofuels industry.
We are therefore asking you to show your support by having as
many farmers as possible send a letter to the Prime Minister and
Minister of Finance urging them to provide tax parity for biofuels.

Wants Producers to Benefit from Expiry of Patents
The Saskatchewan Canola Development
Commission (SCDC) is concerned about the uncertainty of the patent
issue and the potential impact to the Saskatchewan canola industry.
Even though a number of canola-related patents should be expiring,
it isn't clear whether farmers will benefit from lower costs.

Stats Canada Estimates Predict Canola Acres Up
Prairie farmers have planted considerably more spring wheat and
canola than they had anticipated in March, according to data from
the annual June farm survey, which also indicate a record area
for dry field peas.
