| Canola Meal
Canola meal is used as a protein supplement
in dairy, beef, swine and poultry rations and is recognized for
its consistent quality and value. The increased processing activity
within Canada has led to rising consumption and exports of meal
and product mixtures. Feed mixtures include such items as pea-can
meal (combining dry peas and canola meal) as well as incorporating
canola meal with dehydrated alfalfa products. The bulk of Canada's
canola meal exports supply the U.S. feed ingredient market which
imports over a million tonnes annually and represents 80% or more
of total meal exports. Feed deficit Asian countries like Japan,
Taiwan and South Korea are also consistent markets for Canadian
meal.
Canola meal is usually sold in pelleted form
to export markets. The standard is 90% by mass of the meal pellets
retained on a 2.0-mm (No. 10) sieve. Domestically, meal is sold
in mash form. The standard is 90% through a 1.7-mm (No. 12) sieve,
or 97% through a 2.0-mm (No. 10) sieve.
Nutritional Value of
Canola Meal
Canola meal is definitely a more suitable feedstuff for livestock
and poultry than the high glucosinolate rapeseed meal formerly
produced in Canada and still produced in some parts of the world.
Due to the low glucosinolate content of canola meal, it may be
included in rations for swine and poultry at considerably higher
levels than high glucosinolate rapeseed meal. Based on nutrient
content alone, canola meal is worth, on a unit weight basis, 70
to 75% of the value of 44% protein soybean meal for feeding poultry
and about 75 to 80% for feeding swine and ruminants. When canola
meal costs less than these percentages relative to 44% protein
soybean meal, canola meal should be used up to maximum recommended
usage levels. *
