Funded Programs

Levy contributions fund canola producer programs and services through SaskCanola and the Canola Council of Canada.

SaskCanola concentrates its efforts on three core areas for registered producers:

  1. Research
  2. Market Development
  3. Communication

1. Research
Our Research Portfolio is dedicated to maintaining sustainable competitive advantages for the industry through investments in four major areas:

  • Trait commercialization,
  • Canola agronomy research
  • Canola utilization research
  • Germplasm development

2. Market Development
Through a Core Funding agreement, SaskCanola provides annual funds to the Canola Council of Canada that are directed to market development programs designed to increase the demand for canola and canola products. Some core funds are matched by the federal government.

Areas of focus include:

  • Maintaining and increasing markets for canola oil in the U.S. and Mexico;
  • Engaging consumers through CanolaInfo (a canola oil promotion program, visit www.canolainfo.org);
  • Access issues in Japan, China, the EU and other countries;
  • Increasing canola meal inclusion in livestock rations and
  • Biodiesel promotion.

3. Communications
Communications with three distinct groups are necessary to ensure a vibrant and profitable industry:

  • Saskatchewan's agricultural producers,
  • Canadian consumers, and
  • Government institutions.

Saskatchewan is a key canola growing area and all members of our rural and urban population should understand the success of the industry, its positive financial impact on our economy and the direct benefit to human health from the consumption of healthy oil as a part of a balanced diet.

The Communications portfolio will inform agriculture producers of:

  • the investments that are made with your levy;
  • the research undertaken and how it may modify your farming practices;
  • better agronomic practices;
  • opportunities for youth in the agriculture industry;
  • the operation of your commission; and
  • market development initiatives to increase seed, oil and meal sales internationally.

The Communications portfolio will inform consumers of the health benefits of the oil; and also advance public awareness of the economic benefits of this industry to Saskatchewan and Canada.

As part of its consumer and public awareness initiatives, this portfolio includes:

  • Organization and participation of SaskCanola producers along with other organizations at the annual Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto
  • Partnership with the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the Kickoff to Good Health campaign;
  • Development of partnerships provincially and nationally to advance consumer awareness and demand for canola oil.

The Communications portfolio will inform government of:

  • the positive economic benefits of canola to the province and country;
  • producers, crushers, and protein processors positive impact on rural communities in Saskatchewan and Canada.
