Levy Dollars at Work for You

Canola has brought many economic opportunities to farmers in Saskatchewan over the last three decades but the momentum must continue. To further explore and secure canola markets and to continue to have agronomic success, the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission works on research, market development and communications, and education programming. Your levy dollars are often matched by federal government funds to ensure that canola research continues and that through market development activities, canola is promoted nationally and internationally. Further, when farmers provide funds for market development, communications, education programming and research, they have more control over the allocation of those funds through the farmer directed Board.

The Canola Levy
A 75 cent ($0.75) per tonne levy on Saskatchewan produced canola is collected. Under provincial government legislation, the levy must be collected by buyers at the time of sale. The buyers forward the levy to the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission. Any change to the levy level requires approval at an annual general meeting following notification of all Saskatchewan canola producers.

The levy may be refunded annually upon request by the producer. The refund will be comprised of levy collected for the period August 1 to July 31 of the following year. Applications for refunds may be submitted to the SaskCanola office anytime during this period, but must be received no later than August 31.
