| The Canola Check-Off
A 75 cent ($0.75) per tonne check-off on Saskatchewan
produced canola is collected. Under provincial government legislation,
the check-off must be collected by buyers at the time of sale.
The buyers forward the check-off to the Saskatchewan Canola Development
Commission. Any change to the check-off level requires approval
at an annual general meeting following notification of all Saskatchewan
canola producers. The check-off is refundable upon request by
the producer. Check-off collections are divided into two periods:
• Period 1 - August 1 to January
31
• Period 2 - February 1 to July 31
Applications for refunds must be received by
the SCDC by February 28 for Period 1 and by August 31 for Period
2. The SCDC will issue refund cheques no later than April 30 for
Period 1 and no later than October 31 for Period 2.
Why a Check-Off?
Canola has brought many economic opportunities to farmers in Saskatchewan
over the last three decades but the momentum must continue. To
further explore and secure canola markets and to continue to have
agronomic success , the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission
works on research, market development and extension. Your check-off
dollars are often matched by federal government funds to ensure
that canola research continues and that canola is promoted nationally
and internationally. Further, when farmers provide funds for market
development and research, they have more control over the allocation
of those funds through the farmer directed Board. |
